NCAA Football 2019 Attendance, Week 9: Sub-1000 FCS Game

Week nine saw average attendance drop by nearly 1,000 from 24,044 to 23,087 across all of Division I, largely on the back of poor weather throughout the midwest, I’m guessing. Five games were below 10,000 in the FBS, three in the MAC and two in Conference USA. Let’s take a look at how everyone else fared, shall we?

Worst overall Division I attendance: 878 – Valparaiso vs Stetson. A pouring Saturday with temperatures in the 40s to see a non-scholarship D1 team in a 19-10 slogfest that at least the home team won. So surely someone was happy about going to the game, but there couldn’t have been much reason to otherwise, as the poor Florida based Stetson Hatters jumped on the sidelines all game to keep warm:

Worst overall FBS attendance: 5,572 – Ball State vs Ohio.  More driving rain, a 4-3 Ball State team that won’t be challenging for a MAC title against a bad Ohio Bobcats team seems to be the combination that draws below 6,000 to an FBS game, but at least the band was out in full force:

Worst overall Power Five attendance: 23,058 – Rutgers vs Liberty. You’re telling me that not a lot of people wanted to see the new-to-FBS Liberty Flames come in and be a seven point favorite over Rutgers? Surely you jest, but it seems that the Scarlet Knights ran into that problem last week. A problem they overcame with a 44-34 victory that might inspire a few more folks to show up next week. Emptiest FCS stadium as a percentage of capacity: Florida A&M (4.1% full, 1,051 in attendance)

Emptiest FBS stadium as a percentage of capacity: Northern Illinois (19.6% full, 9,027 in attendance)

Emptiest FBS Power Five stadium as a percentage of capacity: UCLA (43% full, 39,811 in attendance)
