NCAA Football 2019 Attendance, Week 8: Rainy October Saturdays in the South

Week eight saw average attendance rise slightly 24,044 from 23,922 across all of Division I, even with rain dominating the southeast on Saturday. Even still, some teams struggled to draw more than 20,000 in FBS last week. Let’s take a look at how everyone else fared, shall we?

Worst overall Division I attendance: 1,158 – Delaware State vs Merrimack. Delaware State is the 6th worst team in FCS, so it’s no surprise that nobody wanted to show up to see them play first-year-in-FCS Merrimack, who took home the 30-21 victory, the Warriors first FCS opponent win since moving up this year. Some video where the sparse crowd can kinda sorta be seen:

Worst overall FBS attendance: 11,015 – Georgia Southern vs Coastal Carolina.  In driving rain, not many were willing to show up after last week the Eagles needed 2OT to beat South Alabama. Those who showed up got an even bigger treat: 3OT, and a 30-27 Eagle win over the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina. While not many showed up, the band was certainly there helping fill in the crowd:

Worst overall Power Five attendance: 23,900 – Vanderbilt vs Missouri. The second straight week that the ‘Dores have been at the bottom of attendance in the Power Five, and they’re bad even by Vanderbilt standards. But those who stayed loyal through the storm were rewarded with a 21-14 conference victory, Vanderbilt’s first this season, and over a ranked Missouri team nonetheless!

Emptiest FCS stadium as a percentage of capacity: Texas Southern (5.6% full, 5,136 in attendance)

Emptiest FBS stadium as a percentage of capacity: UTSA (27.2% full, 17,657 in attendance)

Emptiest FBS Power Five stadium as a percentage of capacity: Rutgers (50.4% full, 26,429 in attendance)
