NCAA Football Attendance, 2017, Week 9: MACtion, SMACtion

Time again for your week in review on NCAA Division I Football attendance. Average attendance was up to 24,358 this week, the second lowest average attendance of the year. Let’s take a look, shall we?

Worst overall Division I attendance week 9: 1,406 – Drake vs Davidson. Despite the small crowd, the Bulldogs took home the 17-12 win. The 1,406 in attendance was good for the 9th lowest attended D-I game on the year, and Drake’s smallest home crowd. However, Drake had played in front of a smaller crowd when they faced Marist (THE MIGHTY RED FOXES) earlier this season.

Worst overall FBS attendance week 9: 7,103 – Ball State vs Toledo. So much for MACtion, as two MAC games drew fewer than 10,000 fans. Only a hair over 7,000 showed up in Muncie to see the Cardinals get trounced by Toledo, 58-17. Of course, cold weather throughout the midwest was used for many as an excuse, but fans of #117 ranked Ball State likely had better things to do irrespective of the weather.

Worst overall Power Five attendance week 9: 29,593 – Wake Forest vs Louisville. The sneaky-good Demon Deacons upset the Cardinals on Saturday, and to their credit, they managed to fill the stadium. At 91.1% full, this appearance on the bottom of the Power Five is largely attributable to the smallest Power Five stadium there in Winston-Salem. With a capacity of 32,483, it is no surprise that Wake is at the bottom this week, but even their announced 29,593 seems generous, according to the weather camera:

Emptiest FCS stadium as a percentage of capacity, week 9: Drake (9.7% full, 1,706 in attendance)

Emptiest FBS stadium as a percentage of capacity, week 9: N Illinois (19.3% full, 8,872 in attendance)

Emptiest FBS Power Five stadium as a percentage of capacity, week 9: Pitt (46.3% full, 30,889 in attendance)
