The ejections continue at nearly an exponential pace with SEVENTEEN ejections this week, seven of which were the result of the now-famous Odor Punch™ & ensuing brawl that took place on Sunday. The American League continues to absolutely dominate the National League, with 29 ejections on the season to the Senior Circuit’s 18. In completely unsurprising news, the Blue Jays have been thrust into the top spot in the ejections contest with a total of seven on the season, six on Sunday alone. I can’t wait to see what next week looks like, should the ejections trend continue.
In the pace of play world, the Mets continue to be the quickest playing team in baseball. For the second straight week, the New Yorkers have led the league in average game time, with this week clocking in at 2:46. On the other side of things, the Astros had the longest average game this week at 3:35. This was buoyed by two extra inning games of 16 and 11 innings, respectively, and two nine-inning games of 3:40 or greater in Boston, which seems like the slowest stadium in baseball. One of those Astros-Red Sox games also turned out to be the week’s windiest, with a 25 mile an hour wind out to right. Interestingly, only one home run was hit to right field, though Fenway maintains one of the deepest RFs in baseball.
On the temperature front, the first 100+ degree game was played in Phoenix, with the roof open. The remainder of the series was played with a closed roof, despite the dryness of the Arizona air. Chicago, on the other hand, was quite polar, despite having some impressively hot teams. The Cubs and Pittsburgh played in a chilly 44 degrees on Sunday which was apparently cool enough to stop the Cubs–a rare feat this year– who ended up losing to the Pirates 2-1.
And finally, attendance. The state of Ohio is really having trouble drawing crowds to baseball games this year. The Reds drew 12,103 and 14,694 to their two sole home games this week, two of the lowest attended games in all of MLB this week. The Reds currently sit in 25th overall for attendance, while their intrastate counterparts in Cleveland sit in last.
