Below The Box Score: Twelve Ejections & Cleveland Sets Record Low Attendance – Week of 5/9

The interesting stat of the week? 12 ejections, ten of which were in the American League, giving the league a commanding lead in season ejections, 18-11.

Secondarily, the story remains Cleveland’s terrible attendance. At this point, there have been three games this entire MLB season with fewer than 10,000 fans and all three took place at Progressive Field. This week, Cleveland set the season low with a Wednesday night game against division foe Detroit that only managed to draw 8,766 fans.  To Indians’ fans credit, there was Game 2 of the NBA Conference Semifinals taking place in Cleveland that night, so this is seemingly explained by that. Impressively, the Cavs did draw 20,562 that evening, 135% more than the Indians. The baseball game started at 6:10 PM and went only 2:19, while the basketball game started at 8 PM, which means that those at the baseball game would’ve only managed to miss the first quarter or so.

In pace of play news, every team played a game shorter than 3 hours this week, and every team played a game longer than 3 hours. There was nothing particularly interesting on the short side of things, with the aforementioned 2:19 game being the quickest game of the week. On the long side, only two games went longer than 4 hours, the longest being a 4:54 13-inning affair between the Cubs and the Nationals.

On the weather front, more nice weather. All games were between 45-85 degrees with average temps between 54.5-78.5. Winds stayed mostly light, though the Cubs and Nationals did play a game with a 23 MPH wind in from left field, the season’s windiest so far. A pleasant spring week for all!

One response to “Below The Box Score: Twelve Ejections & Cleveland Sets Record Low Attendance – Week of 5/9”

  1. […] New this week, the Cleveland Indians take the top spot, hopping the Chicago Cubs. What makes this even more impressive is that the Indians are a full 20 points lower than the Cubs in the MLB ranks, which are the most heavily weighted in the model. Despite the .541 winning percentage in MLB, Cleveland has the winningest AAA and AA teams, while having the second-winningest A-advanced team. AMSTS has been a pretty harsh critic of the state of Ohio in general, but it appears that Cleveland, Columbus, and Akron are combining to be a powerhouse in the baseball world. Yet still, the Indians are the only team to draw fewer than 10,000 fans to a game this year.  […]
