Below the Box Score, Week of 9/11/17: Destroying The Lowest Attendance of the Year

Well, the Rays have done it again: a new low attendance mark on the season. And the season before that. And the one before that. All the way back to 2006, no team has drawn fewer than 8,000 fans (excluding hurricane-moved games and empty stadium games due to riots). The Rays on Tuesday went way below that: 6,509 fans in attendance. In fact, the attendance was so low, they didn’t even bother reporting the time of game. The Rays then drew 7,185 the following afternoon to finish the series on a strong note. The good news is that the Rays will be playing home games in Citi Field next week, giving them the opportunity to play in front of some fans, hopefully.

The Rays were joined by the A’s, White Sox, Reds, Pirates, Marlins, Mariners, Padres, and Braves in the sub-20k attended group this week. Of those, the A’s, White Sox, Marlins, Reds, and Pirates averaged below that mark. On the top end of things, only the Dodgers, Cardinals, Blue Jays, and Cubs drew above 40,000 once last week, with only the Blue Jays not averaging above the mark.

We also had our longest game of the season with the nineteen inning marathon between the Blue Jays and Red Sox clocking in at 6:00. Even with that, overall game time continued to average almost exactly 3:05, with the Phillies and Nationals playing for only 2:16 on Sunday.

Ejections continued to tilt to the American League, who crossed the 100 ejections threshold on the season. The National League, on the other hand, reached a “nice” level, staying 30+ ejections behind the American League.
