It’s a story of the haves and have-nots. Overall, attendance continues to plummet, as NFL season starts and teams get mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. Just this week, the Rays, (first place) Indians, Athletics, White Sox, Reds, Mariners, Marlins, (first place) Nationals, and Twins all had fewer than 20,000 come through the gates for one of their home games this week. Of those nine, only the Twins and Nationals averaged more than 20,000 on the week. On the top end though, nine teams also had greater than 40,000 fans attend one game, the Braves, Blue Jays, Cardinals, Dodgers, Brewers, Yankees, Angels, Astros and Padres all topped the notch, with only the Blue Jays, Cardinals, and Dodgers averaging above that level.
Taking a look at time of game this week and we see that most games tended to run long, potentially impacted by the number of available pitchers afforded to teams after rosters expanded on September 1. Only seven teams averaged games below three hours this week, with the longest game of the week being a 12 inning affair between the Diamondbacks and Giants that went 5:23.
Ejections have settled down, with a rather average number of six ejections split across the two leagues evenly, and no team having more than one ejection this week. As the playoffs approach and tensions run high, I would expect that number to increase in the coming weeks.
On the weather front, the roof in Phoenix was opened as the temps were a chilly 99 degrees, which brings the Dbacks into the weather discussion again after a summer full of indoor baseball. Color me surprised when I point out yet again that the Bay Area had the coldest temperatures of the week, with a 60 degree game on Friday.
