Umpire Gets Ejected By Player, Giants Might As Well Play In Refrigerator: Below the Box Score, Week of 6/20

If you’re a fan of attending the ballgame with a nice summer’s breeze, and view going to a baseball game as an opportunity to sit outside in the nice weather, it’s safe to say you probably don’t attend San Francisco Giants games. At least through June. The Giants hosted a miserable (weather-wise) three game series this week, with temperatures varying from a frigid 58 to a chilly 61, with every game having winds between 21-25 MPH. In fact, the Giants have only had one home game in the 70s this year, with an average temperature a hair above 60 degrees. I made this beautiful chart for you¹ to demonstrate this:

Meanwhile, had you driven a few hours down I-5, you would’ve been pining for a cold day as you sat in Dodger Stadium in 99 degree temperatures, the highest of the week, and highest of the season outside of Phoenix. Luckily for fans on both ends of the temperature spectrum, the home team won in both LA and in all three games in SF. Added bonus for Dodgers fans, their 99 degree game only went 2:45. Game time this week was as a whole very high. Only 12 teams averaged a time of game of three hours or less, while nine averaged 3:15 or greater. At 5:18, the longest game of the week goes to the 13 inning battle between the Reds and the Braves, won 9-8 by the Braves.

On the attendance front, the Indians AVERAGED 28,082 FANS THIS WEEK! A great sports week for Cleveland that culminated in last night’s NBA title. The A’s, Rays, Braves, and White Sox only managed an average attendance below 20,000 with the A’s drawing a mere 10,115 to take the lowest attendance of the week, and also the lowest non-Indians attendance of the year. On the top end, seven teams averaged above 40,000 this week, suggesting that prime baseball watching season is in full swing

And finally, ejections. With only five this week, the pace of ejections has decreased dramatically since we had 18 during the week of May 16. Only five this week, while the American League maintains its ~~position of strength~~ lead over the National League by a wide 46-32 margin. This is also the first instance I am aware of this season where an umpire was ejected by a player, as Dale Scott took a Ryan Flaherty foul ball to the family jewels, continuing the epidemic of unfortunate shots to the groin this season (see: Joseph, Caleb; Gomes,Yan; Uribe, Juan).
