Rangers Claim Top Organization, Yankees Take Top Farm System: Baseball Organizational Computer Rankings, Week of 6/17

Every week we take a look at the weekly changes in the Baseball Organizational Rankings that we here at AMSTS have created in an effort to quantify the quality of various team’s entire organization.

For those unfamiliar with the Baseball Organizational Rankings, they’re a simple metric that takes winning percentages and weights each tier of major and minor leagues by some AMSTS-defined defaults (but are also user-customizable to play around with different results!).

New this week, the Texas Rangers have recaptured the top spot in this week’s overall rankings, after a long hiatus in 2nd and 3rd positions since early May. The Rangers gained a couple of points, primarily riding the four game winning streak of the MLB team, to jump into the top spot. The second position goes to the Chicago Cubs, who went a mediocre (for them, this season) 3-3, while their AAA affiliate in Iowa went 2-6. Overall this cost the Cubs org a whopping 4.4 points, putting them 5.4 points behind the Rangers. The third spot goes to the consistent Washington Nationals, who jumped two spots this week, hurdling the Cleveland Indians, who dropped 8.1 points mainly on AAA Columbus going 1-6 in the past week.

Meanwhile in the farm rankings, the New York Yankees have claimed the top spot from the aforementioned Indians, while second place belongs to the Philadelphia Phillies, their first time in the top three this season. The Rangers round up the top three spots for the farm rankings.

On the losing side of things, the Atlanta Braves hold on to the bottom spot, being pretty much untouchable in that position. The Braves have narrowed the gap to a mere 13 points between themselves and the second worst organization (according to the computers), Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.  Above them sit the Minnesota Twins, mostly tied directly to their MLB performance, though both trending positive this week.  In the farm rankings, the Kansas City Royals have continued their slide, dethroning the Baltimore Orioles at the bottom. Kansas City has dropped nearly 15 spots in the last two weeks alone.

Finally, as always, your miscellaneous facts:

Biggest winner (organizational): Colorado, up 4 spots this week to 20th overall.

Biggest winner (farm): St. Louis, up 5 spots this week to 15th overall.

Biggest loser (organizational): Chicago White Sox, down 3 spots to 24th overall.

Biggest loser (farm): Chicago Cubs, down 5 spots to 17th overall.

Here are your full week changes for both the full organizational rankings and the farm-only rankings which exclude the MLB affiliates. Of course you can always play around with the Baseball Organizational Rankings yourself if you want to splice the data some more.
