Every week we take a look at the weekly changes in the Baseball Organizational Rankings that we here at AMSTS have created in an effort to quantify the quality of various team’s entire organization.
For those unfamiliar with the Baseball Organizational Rankings, they’re a simple metric that takes winning percentages and weights each tier of major and minor leagues by some AMSTS-defined defaults (but are also user-customizable to play around with different results!).
Once again this week, the Cleveland Indians hold the top spot, losing some ground to the red-hot Seattle Mariners organization, who gained four spots and over seven points in this week’s poll. Most of Seattle’s gain has been on the back of AAA affiliate Tacoma, who is 8-2 in their last ten games and has the best winning percentage in all of AAA.
Meanwhile, in third this week is the Texas Rangers‘ organization, who were able to jump one spot, hurdling the Chicago Cubs, whose AAA affiliate in Iowa has gone 1-9 over their past 10 games, and the Philadelphia Phillies, who have slid three spots this week. The biggest losers in the organizational rankings this week are the Tampa Bay Rays, who dropped seven spots but only four points, which puts them in 23rd. The cluster is so tight from 15th to 23rd that only four points separate the two extremes, and the middle of the rankings have seen quite a bit of volatility in the past few weeks.
In the farm rankings (excluding MLB performance), no changes in the top three teams over last week, with the Indians, Rangers, and New York Yankees occupying the top three spots. Cleveland lost 3.6 points this week but still has a commanding lead at 88.7-83.8 over the Rangers. The biggest winners in the farm rankings are the Houston Astros, who jumped seven spots from 24th to 17th on a gain of three and a half points. Much like the organizational rankings, a cluster of teams sits with only 2.6 points separating 19th from 26th overall.
On the bottom end of the scale, our worst organization of the week once again belongs to the Atlanta Braves, the owners of the worst record in Major League Baseball. The Braves have gained an additional 2.2 points this week, narrowing the gap to the second worst team, the Minnesota Twins, to under 10 points. The good news for Braves fans is that the organization has climbed one spot in the farm rankings to 27th.
When you remove the weighting for MLB teams, your worst minor league system this week belongs to the Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles are hurt the most by having a terrible AAA performance by their affiliate, the Norfolk Tides, who are currently 17-31. The San Francisco Giants gained two points this week to hop the Orioles and claim 29th place, while above them sit the Chicago White Sox, who lost 2.2 points. The Miami Marlins are the big winners at the bottom of the standings with a 4.7 point gain this week vaulting them to 26th place in the farm rankings.
Your miscellany:
Biggest winner (organizational): San Francisco, up 7 spots this week to 12th overall.
Biggest winner (farm): Houston, up 7 spots this week to 17th overall.
Biggest loser (organizational): Tampa Bay, down 7 spots to 23rd overall.
Biggest loser (farm): TIE Chicago Cubs and Tampa Bay, both down 4 spots to 18th and 22nd overall respectively.
Here are your full week changes for both the full organizational rankings and the farm-only rankings which exclude the MLB affiliates. Of course you can always play around with the Baseball Organizational Rankings yourself if you want to splice the data some more.
