AL Dominates Ejections Race While Cleveland Still Can't Get People To Show Up: Below the Box Score, Week of 5/23

Cooler heads have prevailed this week, as only nine ejections were recorded to last week’s 17. Interestingly, the AL continues to dominate, having almost twice as many ejections as the NL, with a score of 37-19. This week the Blue Jays once again took center (or rather, centre) stage with three ejections in three separate incidents, including the rare “Top of the first arguing balls and strikes” ejection.

In attendance, the story remains the Cleveland Indians. Another two games this week, with 12,184 and 13,095 announced. To put a little perspective on the Indians’ attendance this year: If they were to trade venues with their basketball counterparts, the Cavaliers, and play in Quicken Loans Arena (ignoring the logistics for a moment), they would STILL have only sold out one game this season: Opening Day. Truly sad to see a baseball hungry city get its passion sucked out by years upon years of bad baseball. The Indians, after all, were the first MLB team to sell out every game in a season, in 1996, and had a then-unheard-of 455 consecutive game sellout streak.

But even the Indians didn’t set the lowest attendance record of the week. That honor came to Oakland, who had 10,068 on Monday night to see the Rangers in town. The game itself had all the hallmarks of an enjoyable experience: 65 degrees, 2:28 minutes long, and an A’s 3-1 victory, but the Coliseum is a terrible venue for baseball. And oh yeah, there was this red hot basketball team playing a basketball game across the parking lot at 9 PM. The Warriors outdrew the Athletics by an additional 9,528 fans.

Not much to talk about on the weather front, as every game fell between 52 and 90 degrees, which just about sounds perfect for baseball this time of year. Some brisk winds of 22 MPH in Oakland were blowing out to RF on Friday, but still no HRs were recorded, though there were an impressive three triples.

And finally, pace of play this week really benefited Rangers fans, as they managed to average 2:35 of game time, with the longest Rangers game last week (2:45) being shorter than the shortest Tigers, Reds, and Indians games (2:48 for all three). Overall, 18 teams averaged 3:00 or less this week, which seems to indicate that the overall pace of baseball is turning around from the dark days of the 2000s.
