Editor note: This continues a series of conference tournament previews for the worst conferences in college basketball. Every day we will preview the conference tournaments for the non “Power” conferences that will begin on that day. Today we have the Colonial Athletic and the Southern (SoCon) With apologies to the former USSR, here is the AMSTS CCCP (Crappy Conference Championship Preview)
Conference: Colonial Athletic
Rough Geographic Area: Eastern seaboard
School you’ve probably heard of: Another set of thin pickings… UNC Wilmington? The Seahawks beat USC in OT in the 2002 NCAA Tournament, their only win.
School you may not have heard of: Elon. The Phoenix have never made an NCAA Tournament, and I had to look up where exactly Elon, North Carolina is. It’s nowhere. This school may not even exist. The more I read, the more I question its existence.
Favorite: UNC Wilmington 22-7 (14-4), #86 in the AMSTS Computer Rankings
Dark Horse: James Madison 21-10 (11-7), #92 in the AMSTS Computer Rankings
Game that might be closer than it should be: #4 James Madison vs #5 William and Mary could be the game to watch, or the Semifinal that follows, with the winner taking on Hofstra. My guess is James Madison makes a run and faces UNC Wilmington in the Final, which will be some good watching.
Likely seed with Massey Conference Ratings: 13, ranked 10th of 32 conferences by the Massey Ratings Compiler.
How to watch the games: CAA.tv, Semifinals and Championship on NBC Sports Network.
Conference: Southern (often SoCon)
Rough Geographic Area: The traditional south, unlike the Big South.
School you’ve probably heard of: Wofford, they’ve represented the SoCon for 4 out of the past 6 NCAA Tournaments
School you may not have heard of: Furman University. The Paladins call Greenville, SC home, and have not been to the tournament since 1980. Oh, and by the way, a Paladin is one of the foremost warriors of Charlemagne’s court. Probably one of the more obscure Division 1 team nicknames.
Favorite: Chattanooga 25-5 (14-3), #74 in the AMSTS Computer Rankings
Dark Horse: Mercer 18-12 (8-9), #175 in the AMSTS Computer Rankings
Game that might be closer than it should be: This conference tournament will be all Chattanooga. The rest of the games should be close, as the 2nd through 5th teams (ETSU, Furman, Wofford, Western Carolina) are all close in talent.
Likely seed with Massey Conference Ratings: 13, ranked 19th of 32 conferences by the Massey Ratings Compiler.
How to watch the games: ESPN 3, Championship on ESPN or ESPN2.
