If you like ump shows, you’re gonna love the way this week looked. Over the course of the week, a season record 11 teams had a player or manager get rung, totaling 16 ejections on the week. The total ejections for the week come in second to the week of the Rangers-Blue Jays brawl, but this was quite a bit broader than one incident. When you total up the week, the AL was sent off nine times to the NL’s seven, widening the gap to eight, 95-87. With only one more week left in the season, it seems that the AL wins the ejection title for the season, though another week with 16 ejections could put the title into play.
Attendance continues to be embarrassing if you’re an Indians or Orioles fan, as the teams both drew fewer than 20,000 in at least one game last week, joining five other non-contending teams. The Indians even managed to average below 20,000, along with the A’s, Rays, and Phillies. Meanwhile, the Dodgers nearly averaged 50,000 this week, with 49,852 showing up over each game as they clinched the NL West.
The Mariners and Twins played the second shortest game of the season last week, at a brisk 2:06 during Saturday’s 3-2 Twins victory. Overall, games ran long, however, as only ten teams averaged three hours or less of gametime this week. The Pirates took the longest game of the week, beating the Nationals 6-5 in 4:36 over 11 innings.
And finally in the weather department, fall is moving in, with the Blue Jays having played in the two coldest games this week at 60 degrees, one at home and one in Seattle. Meanwhile, those 50,000 fans mentioned in LA were roasting on Sunday as the game started in 97 degree temperatures. Those hearty enough to stay through the whole game were greeted with a Dodgers win in the 10th after 3:33 of play.
