Seven Teams Draw Below 20k, Royals Average 3:37 Time of Game - BtBS, Week of 9/5

The story of the week once again is dwindling attendance, even in teams that are in playoff contention. Last week, seven teams had a game with fewer than 20,000 fans, the Indians, Rays, Orioles, Phillies, Mariners, Brewers, and Astros. Of those seven, four (Rays, Phillies, Indians, Brewers) averaged below the 20k mark for the entire week. The Indians hosted the Twins — a division foe!– in front of only 11,327. Only the Dodgers, Rangers, Giants, and Cubs saw greater than 40,000 this week with the Dodgers and Giants both averaging above that number.

In ejections, the American League widened its lead over the senior circuit to 12, with four ejections to the NL’s 3. All but one ejection this week were by the away teams, a relatively rare occurrence.

Game speed really slowed down this week, with the Royals averaging 3:37 over the week, with a couple of extra inning four hour games, with the shortest game of the week still being 3:14. This was four minutes longer than the next closest team of the week, the Pirates, who came in at 3:33. On Wednesday, the Angels and Reds played to a 2:10

On the weather front, the Bay Area still has the coldest weather of the week with the A’s not playing a game above 65 degrees. On the other end, summer heat has not left entirely, as seven teams faced off in 90+ degree temperatures in the last week. Only Cleveland played in considerable wind this week, averaging 13.5 MPH over the course of the week.
