NL Finally Catches Up in Ejections, Dodgers Draw 50,000 - Below the Box Score, Week of 8/1

With five ejections this week — four in the National League — there have now been an equal number of ejections in each league for the first time this season. Each league has 60 ejections, an average of four per team, though the Brewers remain the only team without an ejection so far this year. Pittsburgh continues to inch closer to the number one spot, with 12 ejections to Toronto’s 14.

Attendance remained good this week, with only the Rays, Orioles, and Marlins drawing fewer than 20,000 people to any individual game. No team, including the three aforementioned, averaged less than 20,000 for the entire week. Even more impressive, the Dodgers were the first (and most likely, only) team to draw 50,000 fans to a game this season, with the Friday game against the Diamondbacks drawing 50,966. Along with the Dodgers, the Blue Jays, Giants, Cubs, and Angels averaged over 40,000 fans this week.

Another quick week of games, as everyone but the Nationals played a sub-3:00 game this week, and the National’s managed to play six games 3:11-3:29, so even the average is something that the Commish will find acceptable. The longest game was Sunday’s 12-inning Cubs-Mariners affair, and even that was only 4:18. The Rangers played a remarkably quick 2:43 on average last week, while the Dodgers and Nationals both averaged 3:18, the high for the week.

And on the weather front, no surprise that the Giants are the chilliest spot in all of baseball, with a temperature range this week between 58-70 degrees. Elsewhere, most teams saw above 80 degree temperatures, with the Rangers unsurprisingly taking the top spot with an average weekly temperature of 90.3 degrees. As to be expected in the peak of summer, winds were quite light league-wide, with the Tigers-Red Sox game having the most blustery conditions with a wind of 18 MPH.
