No AL Ejections This Week, Warmest Temps of the Year: Below the Box Score, Week of 7/25

The dog days of summer are upon us this week, as both the Cardinals and Nationals hosted games on Sunday in a balmy 96 degrees. While temperatures may have risen, tempers certainly have not, as we had the fewest ejections in a week since May. With four ejections — all in the National League! — the gap between leagues is as narrow as it has been all season with the AL leading by only three: 59-56.

The first full week of the second half of the season brought the fans out to the ballpark, as only the A’s and Phillies drew fewer than 20,000 to a game this week, and of the two, only the A’s averaged below 20,000. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays, Brewers, Cardinals, and Cubs drew greater than 40,000 on the week.

For the first time in just over a month, every team played a sub-3:00 game this week, with the shortest clocking in at 2:08 between the White Sox and Tigers. Unsurprisingly, the 16-inning matchup between the Cardinals and Dodgers takes the title for longest game of the week, with a total game time of 5:10. Interestingly, the Orioles did not play a single game last week that made it past the three-hour mark, though they were still second to the Mariners in average game time on the week (2:50 to Seattle’s 2:48).

And finally, as usual here in July, beyond the hot temps (only the A’s and Astros didn’t have a game at 85 degrees or above this week), weather was what you would expect this time of year, calm winds, sunshine, and warm. In fact, the Royals averaged a 93 degree temperature this week, with the Padres, Indians, and Cardinals all averaging over 90 degrees. With an average temperature this week of 84.2 degrees, this was the warmest week so far this season. This is buoyed by the Giants being on the road all week, though the A’s managed two games of 65 degrees.
