In an effort to make the success of an organization more clear, we have introduced the AMSTS Baseball Organizational Rankings. This allows you to play around with the sliders to appropriately weight the value of each league, from MLB to the Rookie League, to see what organization tops your list.
Methodology: For the default rankings, I used values of [latex]X^2[/latex] where X was assigned to each league based on the following: MLB = 10, AAA = 8, AA = 6, A = 4, Rookie-Adv = 2. Leagues that fell in between the two levels were given the corresponding halfway point (A-Advanced is 5, Short-A is 3). Rookie-Advanced was chosen instead of Rookie because of the additional league between default Rookie and Single-A. Otherwise, Rookie-Advanced and Short-A would have the same values. These multipliers are then applied towards the winning percentage of the affiliated team in each league.
As an example: If the Orioles were 20-10, their AAA affiliate (Norfolk) 15-15, their AA affiliate (Bowie) 5-25, the ranking would be: [latex] 100*(\dfrac{20}{(20+10)})+64*(\dfrac{15}{(15+15)})+36*(\dfrac{5}{(5+25)})[/latex]
The system by default gives you the rankings of the teams with those league weightings. Should you wish to adjust them, you simply move the sliders appropriately and hit “Submit.” Past date looks are also available and selected through the dropdown.
The rankings are updated every day at 6:00 AM Eastern Time, rain or shine. Due to the season length, Short-A and Rookie Leagues will not be shown until they have begun their season.
Known issues: The Kansas City Royals for some terrible reason have two Rookie-Advanced affiliates. It doesn’t affect the rankings now, but it will likely make things look funky when those leagues start play in June. I will resolve that when it happens.
Shortcomings: It only looks at winning percentage. Yes, this isn’t the most in depth method of doing so, and there are problems when you have multiple leagues, but it’s a good proxy to get an idea of the depth of a particular organization.
