Editor note: This continues a series of conference tournament previews for the worst conferences in college basketball. Every day we will preview the conference tournaments for the non “Power” conferences that will begin on that day. Today we have the Mid-American Conference. With apologies to the former USSR, here is the AMSTS CCCP (Crappy Conference Championship Preview)
Rough Geographic Area: Midwest plus New York
School you’ve probably heard of: Ohio. The Bobcats made an Elite Eight in 1964, and a Sweet 16 in 2012. That’s pretty good compared to the remainder of the conference.
School you may not have heard of: Northern Illinois. The Huskies are 0-3 lifetime in the tournament, with their last appearance being in 1996.
Favorite: Akron 22-7 (11-5). #79 in the AMSTS Computer Rankings.
Dark Horse: Ohio 19-9 (10-6), #108 in the AMSTS Computer Rankings.
Game that might be closer than it should be: The middle of the MAC is pretty tightly constrained, with Ohio, Kent State, Buffalo, Toledo, Central Michigan, Northern Illinois, and Eastern Michigan all tightly bunched. This may be the sleeper conference tournament to watch, with the potential for a lot of close games, though Akron seems most likely to win the whole thing.
Likely seed with Massey Conference Ratings: 13, ranked 11th of 32 conferences by the Massey Ratings Compiler.
How to watch the games: TWC SportsChannel OH, Championship on ESPN2.
