Horizon League and Summit League Crappy Conference Preview

Editor note: This continues a series of conference tournament previews for the worst conferences in college basketball. Every day we will preview the conference tournaments for the non “Power” conferences that will begin on that day. Today we have the Horizon League and the Summit League. With apologies to the former USSR, here is the AMSTS CCCP (Crappy Conference Championship Preview)

Conference: Horizon League

Rough Geographic Area: Midwest

School you’ve probably heard of: Valparaiso. The Crusaders have been the team to beat for the past 5 years, and from 1993-2003 before that.

School you may not have heard of: Northern Kentucky. The Norse call Highland Heights, KY home and has not made an NCAA Tournament appearance in Division 1 since they began their transition in 2012.

Favorite: Valparaiso 25-5 (15-2), #47 in the AMSTS Computer Rankings

Dark Horse: Green Bay 19-11 (11-6), #151 in the AMSTS Computer Rankings

Game that might be closer than it should be: Valpo will walk away with this one, with a bye into the Semifinals. Hope for a good Second Round matchup between Green Bay and Milwaukee, otherwise, spend your time watching another conference tourney.

Likely seed with Massey Conference Ratings: 10, ranked 17th of 32 conferences by the Massey Ratings Compiler.

How to watch the games: ESPN 3, Semifinals on ESPNU, Championship on ESPN or ESPN2.

Conference: Summit League

Rough Geographic Area: Midwest and Great Plains

School you’ve probably heard of: Oral Roberts, most likely because of the name, but also with 3 NCAA Tournaments under their belt, they’re the premier basketball program of the Summit League.  A sad existence.

School you may not have heard of: Western Illinois. The Leathernecks have won a regular season conference title in 2013, but lost in the conference tournament, dashing their NCAA Tournament hopes.

Favorite: South Dakota State 23-7 (12-4), #88 in the AMSTS Computer Rankings

Dark Horse: North Dakota State 18-12 (8-8), #163 in the AMSTS Computer Rankings

Game that might be closer than it should be: #4 IUPUI vs #5 North Dakota State could be the game to watch, with the Bison trying to parlay some football success onto the basketball court. The Jaguars of IUPUI sit at 216 in the AMSTS Computer Rankings, 53 spots below the Bison, which suggests that it wouldn’t be much of an upset.

Likely seed with Massey Conference Ratings: 14 with South Dakota, otherwise 15, ranked 14th of 32 conferences by the Massey Ratings Compiler.

How to watch the games: Midco Sport Network, Championship on ESPN2.
