NCAA Basketball Attendance, 2017 Week Eight: An All-Time Record!

In three years, not once have we ever reported a sub-50 attendance game. But a first for all of us this week. The lowest attended NCAA Basketball game since at least 2015. With that, it was no surprise that attendance was down almost 400 people per game. Let's take a look: Number of games drawing fewer than 1,000 fans: 42 (Season total: 386) Here are the 3 lowest attended games of last week:

Presbyterian vs Radford - Presbyterian's second straight appearance at the number three spot on the attendance list. This week, with only 301 in attendance to see the Blue Hose take on the Highlanders of Radford. Luckily for all of us, the game was televised online on Big South Network (surely causing plenty of Blue Hose fans to stay at home and watch in the comfort of their own home instead of dealing with the headache that is Presbyterian basketball traffic). Radford took the road win 78-62, disappointing dozens of viewers.

Nicholls vs Incarnate Word- Nicholls' third straight week in the two spot, this time with a Division I opponent. With Incarnate Word in town from San Antonio, only 203 showed up to see the Colonels defeat the Cardinals 77-60.

Southern vs Ecclesia - Both of those games pale in comparison to what Southern had in attendance last week. This was Southern's third consecutive year of playing Ecclesia, having drawn 319 in 2015, 121 in 2016 and this year.. was a lot worse. The lowest attendance of ANY NCAA Basketball game since at least 2014 (when we started tracking this stuff). Southern drew a miserable 45 people to see the 98-57 Jaguars victory. This was 10% below the second lowest attended game, a 2015 Alcorn State game against Louisiana College. The most unfortunate part? The poor Twitter guy at Southern even politely asked for people to show up, knowing the game wouldn't be a huge draw:

Let's go ahead with the miscellany: Biggest group of people to see a loss at home this week: BYU (vs St. Mary's) 16,212. Smallest group of people to see a win at home this week: Southern (vs Ecclesia), 45. Smallest Power 5 Conference attendance: Penn State (vs Coppin State), 4,512.
