NCAA College Basketball Attendance, 2017 Week 7: Winter Break Blues

Finals are over, and with it, many students have left campus. As Christmas neared, teams reduced their schedule or found a neutral site to play their games in with the hope of attracting a bigger crowd from a larger metro area near to campus. How did that work out? Average attendance was up almost 800, but the individual results? Let's take a look: Number of games drawing fewer than 1,000 fans: 43 (Season total: 344) Here are the 3 lowest attended games of last week:

Presbyterian vs Piedmont - Another appearance for the Blue Hose in the bottom three, again with Presbyterian hosting a lower division team. This time it was Division III Piedmont College, the most prestigious school in Athens, GA[note]I don't have anything against UGA, I'm just making jokes. Put the pitchfork down, Jim Bob[/note]. The Lions came to Presbyterian and buckled under the pressure of 248 screaming fans in their 77-60 loss. Unrelated, but of note: last week, Presbyterian earned a technical against Toccoa Falls for their version of hockey's "Teddy Bear Toss". Video below

Nicholls vs Mobile - Another appearance in the two spot for Nicholls, but the good news for them this week is that attendance was up 33% to 158 brave souls who came to watch the Colonels take on NAIA-affiliated University of Mobile[note]The Rams![/note] An action shot of the sparse crowd, which is making Stopher Gymnasium a regular here on AMSTS:

Charleston Southern vs Johnson & Wales (NC) -This one is less of a surprise, given that Charleston Southern plays in the smallest arena in Division I. Their home game against USCAA affiliated Johnson & Wales of NC was only able to attract 140 of the 881 capacity of the CSU Field House. The 102-58 win was enough to get a full highlight package on the local news, where you can see the field house rocking.

So now, what happened to everyone else? Let's go ahead with the miscellany: Biggest group of people to see a loss at home this week (non-neutral site): Syracuse (vs St Bonaventure) 20,976. Biggest group of people to see a loss at home this week: Missouri (vs Illinois) 21,289. Smallest group of people to see a win at home this week: Charleston Southern (vs Johnson & Wales), 140. Smallest Power 5 Conference attendance: Washington State (vs Bethune-Cookman), 2,1782.
