College Basketball

As we edge closer to conference championship week (or if you’re a Big Ten fan, the bye week), some games are critical in determining seeding for the tournament.  On the other hand, quite a few games have very little impact.  Most of those games ended up on our list this week.  We also hit the 700 game mark this season for fewer than 1,000 in attendance, which is the highest we’ve seen in the past three years. Let’s take a look at the full week: Number of games drawing fewer than 1,000 fans: 29 (Season total: 702) Here are the […]

NCAA Basketball Attendance, 2017 Week 16: Seven Hundred Sub-1000 Games ...

With my beloved Purdue Boilermakers having played the Arizona Wildcats in both basketball and football this year, the thought entered my mind after the Boilers took the Wildcats to the shed in basketball, “How impressive of a win would Purdue need in the Foster Farms Bowl to blow out Arizona in football worse than they blew out Arizona in basketball?”   Okay, it ended up being moot as Purdue choked away a big first half lead and won the game on a miracle catch by a guy from Paris, France.   But a moot point has never been enough to […]

A Look at Margin of Victory in College Football vs ...

Some frequent offenders in the bottom three this week, as Presbyterian takes the bottom spot once again.  Other than that, a little excitement with some Atlantic Sun and Patriot League matchups finding themselves in the bottom three. As for how everyone else did?  Let’s take a look at the full week: Number of games drawing fewer than 1,000 fans: 33 (Season total: 673) Here are the 3 lowest attended games of last week: Stetson vs Lipscomb– A little A-Sun as the Hatters hosted the Bison in front of 412. With Lipscomb in 2nd in the conference and Stetson second from […]

NCAA Basketball Attendance, 2017 Season, Week 15: Valentine’s Day in ...

A mirror matchup this week made the bottom three as St. Francis took on St. Francis. Beyond that, Arizona State, who started out 12-0, has now fallen so far that they drew the lowest attendance in the Power Five in the last week. And how did everyone else do? Let’s take a look at the full week: Number of games drawing fewer than 1,000 fans: 35 (Season total: 640) Here are the 3 lowest attended games of last week:   St. Francis vs St. Francis – Terriers vs the Red Flash, but who could turn down a game of St. Francis (of Brooklyn) […]

NCAA Basketball Attendance, 2017 Week 14: Arizona State’s Fall From ...

Some more variety at the bottom three from a team standpoint, but familiar conferences as the SWAC and Big South have representatives at the bottom of the list this week. Most interestingly, Presbyterian, who has struggled with attendance this year, matched a record from a previous year. And how did everyone else do? Let’s take a look at the full week: Number of games drawing fewer than 1,000 fans: 32 (Season total: 605) Here are the 3 lowest attended games of last week:   Alabama A&M vs Prairie View A&M – A little SWACtion for you as 423 packed the rafters to see […]

NCAA Basketball Attendance: 2017 Season, Week 13: Presbyterian Has A ...

Plenty of new faces in the bottom three this week, with a couple of conferences making their first appearance at the bottom of the rankings.  Not only that, but some interesting but NC State won two games last week, both on the road. One was against the largest crowd of the week at UNC on Saturday, while the other was against the smallest Power Five attendance of the week at Pitt on Wednesday. Neat! So how did everyone else do? Let’s take a look at the full week: Number of games drawing fewer than 1,000 fans: 33 (Season total: 573) Here […]

NCAA Basketball Attendance, 2017 Week 12: NC State Doesn’t Believe ...

Despite my pleas for Nicholls fans to attend basketball games after last week’s double showing in the bottom three, they’re back this week. Again, this is despite the fact that Nicholls is in first place in the Southland, so it’s not like they’re a bad team!  And they actively tried to bring more fans in the door, as seen here: Needless to say, it didn’t work. Nicholls had plenty of empty seating. But enough about Nicholls, how did everyone else do? Let’s take a look at the full week: Number of games drawing fewer than 1,000 fans: 42 (Season total: 540) […]

NCAA Basketball Attendance, 2017 Week Ten: So That’s What Bobby ...

For the first time in a while, we’ve had a team make a double appearance in the bottom three, both as a home team.  Poor Nicholls, who lead the Southland and are on track to make the NCAA Tournament drew fewer in two games than Bryant University did in one game this week, which was a game with only 600 in attendance.  This doesn’t seem to phase the Colonels, as they now sit at 5-1 in Southland play.  In addition to them, a few other teams managed to play two games this week with a combined attendance below 1,000: St […]

NCAA College Basketball Attendance, 2017 Season Week Ten: Better Things ...

After having a three year low in attendance for a single game last week, it’s a tough act to follow. But this week had quite a bit of action with around 60 games shy of 1,000 fans, and the average attendance dropping fairly precipitously as we enter conference play. Interestingly, Washington played at Washington State this week in front of the lowest crowd of any Power Five conference team.  Apparently the fever of the Apple Cup does not extend into other sports in the state of Washington. Let’s take a look at the full week: Number of games drawing fewer […]

NCAA Basketball Attendance, 2017 Week Nine: So Much For Pacific ...

In three years, not once have we ever reported a sub-50 attendance game. But a first for all of us this week. The lowest attended NCAA Basketball game since at least 2015.  With that, it was no surprise that attendance was down almost 400 people per game.  Let’s take a look: Number of games drawing fewer than 1,000 fans: 42 (Season total: 386) Here are the 3 lowest attended games of last week:   Presbyterian vs Radford – Presbyterian’s second straight appearance at the number three spot on the attendance list. This week, with only 301 in attendance to see the […]

NCAA Basketball Attendance, 2017 Week Eight: An All-Time Record!

Finals are over, and with it, many students have left campus. As Christmas neared, teams reduced their schedule or found a neutral site to play their games in with the hope of attracting a bigger crowd from a larger metro area near to campus. How did that work out? Average attendance was up almost 800, but the individual results? Let’s take a look: Number of games drawing fewer than 1,000 fans: 43 (Season total: 344) Here are the 3 lowest attended games of last week:   Presbyterian vs Piedmont – Another appearance for the Blue Hose in the bottom three, again […]

NCAA College Basketball Attendance, 2017 Week 7: Winter Break Blues

A continued  Let’s take a look: Number of games drawing fewer than 1,000 fans: 41 (Season total: 301) Here are the 3 lowest attended games of last week:   South Carolina State vs Charleston Southern – Despite the in-state matchup, South Carolina State was only able to draw 154 fans for its tilt against Charleston Southern. This was the lowest on-campus matchup between two Division I teams all season.  The lucky 154 were sent home with a Bulldogs win 91-77. A beautiful action shot: 2. Nicholls vs Carver-Stockton – In the “D-I against the NAIA” competition, our first entry for the week is […]
